Naturally Treating Iron Deficiency Anemia – Get Your Iron Up With These Tips!
Iron Deficiency Anemia: Video Overview
In this discussion of iron deficiency anemia, Amandha Vollmer (ADV) explains how she thinks about low iron, red blood cells, oxygen transport and iron absorption. She begins with hemoglobin and the difference between heme and non-heme iron, then discusses common oral iron forms and the digestive side effects she has seen in practice. Her preference in the recording is to look beyond a single supplement and consider diet, digestion and the reason iron levels may be low.
Amandha then works through signs she associates with low iron, including fatigue, pica, pallor, restless legs, hair loss, mouth changes, cold extremities, concentration changes and spoon-shaped nails. She also discusses menstruation, postpartum blood loss, pregnancy, gastrointestinal bleeding and impaired absorption as possible contributors.
The second half focuses on absorption and practical food choices. Amandha discusses vitamin C, phytic acid, calcium, zinc, stomach acid, PPIs and gut integrity before reviewing beans, leafy greens, nuts, seeds and other foods. She closes with Spatone, the Lucky Iron Fish, yellow dock, nettle, Ferrodona, Ferrum Phos and mineral timing, followed by brief discussion of IV iron, B12 and folate.

Important Context & Safety
Educational context: This video presents Amandha Vollmer’s holistic framework and personal experience with iron deficiency anemia. She discusses symptoms, food sources, gut absorption, pregnancy, menstruation, blood loss, plant-based diets, supplements and nutrient timing. She also presents specific views about blood type, stomach pH, baking soda and apple cider vinegar, homeopathic or spagyric products and medication reduction. These remain Amandha’s perspectives from the recording and should not be treated as universal diagnostic or treatment instructions.
Safety context: Iron deficiency should be confirmed with appropriate testing, commonly including a complete blood count and ferritin, because low iron may reflect blood loss, gastrointestinal disease, pregnancy-related needs, malabsorption or another condition. Oral iron is a standard treatment for iron-deficiency anemia and can cause nausea, constipation, abdominal discomfort or diarrhea. Excessive iron can also be harmful. Iron supplements can interact with medications including levothyroxine and levodopa, calcium may interfere with absorption, and proton-pump inhibitors can reduce non-heme iron absorption. Prescription medications should not be stopped or changed based on this recording. ODS
Severe anemia may require IV iron, transfusion or treatment of an underlying bleeding source. Chest pain, significant shortness of breath, fainting, rapidly worsening weakness or heavy or ongoing bleeding requires prompt medical assessment.

Introduction: Iron, Hemoglobin, and Common Iron Supplements
Amandha: Hello, I’m in my treatment room and I would like to talk with you about iron and how to get enough iron. I mean, this is mainly going to be for women generally, unless you’re a male who is exercising a lot or in fitness competions. Or you’re vegan.
Amandha: Usually males will get enough iron through the diet.
Amandha: This is my first live video on my on my page, on my Yummy Mummy Emporium and Apothecary page. So that’s exciting. And usually I do it from my own personal page, but, Facebook loves blocking me for posting truth because they censor. And so I’m censored yet again for another month. So, I’m utilizing this option to still communicate with people and but today I wanna talk about iron.
Amandha: I want to talk about how to use the right amount of iron, get your numbers right, and the way that I do it for my clients and also for myself. I also want to talk about some of the symptoms of iron deficiency and the issues there. That’s my focus today because I’ve had a few people ask about it over the last little while.
Amandha: And sometimes when I get people asking me about a topic, then I go, no, I should do that. Because it’s probably a theme and people have lots of questions. So let’s just clear that up, especially from a holistic standpoint because if you go to your pediatrician, doctor, whatever, they’re going to give you their supplements and they’re very poorly absorbed and utilized and often cause a lot of side effects as all their drugs do.
Amandha: Even if they try to give a supplement, they don’t do it right, and it just is the case. And cuz they’re all pharmaceutically made and synthetically made and anyway, so it’s not the best option. So I’m gonna give you at the end of the video a few options. How do you increase your iron stores naturally?
Amandha: How to get it mostly from food how, what to do to absorb the iron better, et cetera, et cetera. And good morning. I see some people coming in now and okay. So, and if you have questions, I will try to answer those questions as well. First let’s go just to the types of salts that are commonly given.
Amandha: If you do test, you’ll go to the doctor, you’ll get your blood test, and the counts may come back as low hemoglobin. You’ll get a CBC done and it can show that you have a low amount of red blood cells and their derivatives. Let’s talk about what is happening in the blood and why we need iron.
Amandha: In each red blood cell are four heme groups, and heme is a protein. The protein needs an ion of Fe, the chemical symbol for iron. There is one Fe ion on each of the heme units. Those heme units carry oxygen and deliver oxygen to your tissues.
Amandha: Vital for life, right? If you are low in iron, you’re not going to have enough oxygen carrying to all places of your body and you’re going to see symptoms. So we’re also gonna go through symptoms of what that looks like when you might suspect you’re low and. Thing is if you’re low, you might not necessarily be anemic.
Amandha: True anemic because you don’t always see overt symptoms unless you’re low enough where you’re starting to feel those symptoms. And it’s just good if you are vegan or you are fasting long term or so forth just to be paying attention to how you’re feeling and cuz there’s lots of overlap of the symptoms as well, that can be other issues or other diseases.
Amandha: But we are going to you know, tease that out a little bit for you. Okay. The ferrous sulfate, that is the one that you’ll probably, if you go to your doctor, they’d probably give you that salt. Iron supplements are often given in salt forms. The iron ion is bound to something, in this case, to a sulfate, and then that.
Amandha: It is ingested and has to be absorbed. A lot of the issue around iron is absorption. There are two different types of iron: heme iron, which comes from animal foods, and non-heme iron, which comes from plants. The plant version is considered less readily absorbed than heme iron. It doesn’t mean it’s better or worse.
Amandha: It just means you have to be more attentive to how you’re absorbing it. And yes, I will get to that. How to tell when you’re low without needing a blood tester to go to a doctor. So we will go through that. The dose that is given per day in this condition would be 325 milligrams, two to three times a day.
Amandha: What can happen with this dose is a lot of nausea. It usually has to be taken with food and can also lead to constipation, which of course is not very enjoyable. I interpret bowel issues, whether diarrhea or constipation, through the liver and digestive process.
Amandha: Usually under liver congestion or processing is where we have a problem. You must understand that the blood is processed by the liver every three to four minutes in your entire blood volume, and if your liver is not able to process or handle the processing, you will get. A re a response or a reaction in that way.
Amandha: And so it’s important to understand that the organ system responsible for the governing of that is it also needs to be understood. And in this case, the liver is very important and these salts tend to congest the liver and slow the liver enzymes to a point where you’re going to. Constipation because it’s taking so long for the liver enzymes to process it.
Amandha: In a sense, I see it as a toxin, and ideally you don’t want to have to poison your body to get iron. So that one I don’t recommend. There is ferrous gluconate, which contains less iron per tablet and is known to be less constipating.
Amandha: there’s less in it. And also it’s actually not as well absorbed. And so by virtue of its nature, you’re not going to get the same side effects, but you’re not also getting the effect that you want. And I do have people come in, they say they’ve been on these pills and they are not seeing an increase in their proper heme levels in their blood come up in, in any noticeable way.
Amandha: And, I do get people who are having lots of absorption issues there. And then the other one is iron polysaccharide., but this one, again, is poorly absorbed. It must be taken with vitamin C.
Amandha: We’ll talk about that in a little bit more a bit later. But also it can cause a lot of nausea, and that is not also very desirable.
Amandha: Is it?. So these are three of the main forms you’ll see. I don’t really recommend relying only on going to the doctor and getting a pill. I think what the best thing would be is to find food sources and to heal the gut and get proper absorption into the gut through the gut.
Amandha: And that’s how you’re going to maximize your use of the iron, okay? It’s really about healing the blood, healing the gut eating the right foods and getting your oxygen saturation up. And there’s more than just taking iron. There’s more ways to do that than just taking iron, for example. Breathing
Amandha: People really forget to breathe a lot of the time and doing yoga, doing deep breathing. When you do concentrated proper breath, you can increase your oxygen saturation and that’s going to help the absorption through feedback loops through your body. And you may start to actually crave foods that are high in an iron naturally, cuz the body is very.
Signs of Iron Deficiency: Pica, Fatigue, Blood Loss, Hair, and Nails
Amandha: Brilliant that way. Now, if you’re quite in a deficiency state, you can actually crave things that are non, not usually considered food. Clays, although some clays are ingested, I do recommend certain clays for parasite cleanses and so forth. And also heavy metal chelation like zeolite, bentonite, and diatomaceous earth, they’re excellent clays.
Amandha: You can ingest some clays. However, if you’re craving clay or dirt, that’s different. It’s called pica. Pica is when you’re craving non-food items, such as dirt, clay, ice, chalk, or other things that aren’t ordinarily eaten.
Amandha: Some people actually chew their hair, start to eat their hair. This is chalk as well as crave. So these things are when the body wants something, it craves it, it tries to get it, and sometimes it doesn’t work out that well, and it’s you’re going after the wrong thing. But that’s a sign or a symptom that of iron deficiency and usually,
Amandha: Sign of quite severe anemia, actual anemia.
Amandha: So if you have those symptoms, then you’re going to need to pay attention to why you’re having those symptoms. And I would probably get your iron checked if you are having that. So let’s get into more of the signs and symptoms and then I’ll get into the ways to actually get your iron levels up naturally.
Amandha: Also, of course the breathing is part of that as I was.. Just think about it,. It’s the blood and it’s about oxygen carrying capacity. And when you breathe, you carry you, you bring in oxygen, right? So that’s an A, a very much under appreciated aspect of balancing these things. Okay? Tired, feeling tired all the time.
Amandha: Especially a menstruating female or a perimenopausal woman who is menstruating off and on and could have heavier periods. A woman who’s postpartum, who’s just given birth you know, these types of blood losses that also can be from ulcers, can be from a, actually a true Crohn’s disease where there’s chronic bleeding.
Amandha: You often see iron deficiency. It’s one of the key signatures to a true Crohn’s picture. And this is from chronic blood loss and it could be insidious or it could be hidden blood, or could be what they call occult blood.
Amandha: And that is very common because a lot of what we’re seeing in iron deficiency is the fact that the gut is not absorbing.
Amandha: And that is very key to getting iron into the body is through the gut. And we will get into that a little bit more, but some more of the symptoms, obviously feeling tired. If you look underneath the ring of the eye here to this area it should, well, actually, I don’t know if I’m doing too well,
Amandha: I just took my iron. I’m good. If it’s really white and pale now there’s a lot of light coming in. So under normal lighting, it should actually be a nice ruby or robust color. Not bright red, but like a nice warm flesh color. And that’s a good indicator of proper iron as well as sort of a rosy cheek.
Amandha: So not too pale, right? Because if you’re very pale, what that means is, The red blood cells have kind of shrunk. Because the heme is not working properly, so they’ve changed their shape and they’re not delivering oxygen properly to the tissues. And that’s what gives you your rosy glow is actually your red blood cells.
Amandha: That’s what gives you your color. And so a pale individual, very pale. Other than, you know, your. Specific skin types that are very alabaster like, or, you know, there’s certain skin types that are obviously naturally like that. But I’m saying in general, if you have a rosy glow normally and you’ve lost that, you may be iron deficient.
Amandha: So just that’s a key that you can look at. So under the eye, the rosiness that the rosiness of the lip as well can be telling on how much oxygen is being carried by your red blood cells. So the, as well restless legs, and I had this, and I restless legs can be caused by multiple deficiencies, including zinc.
Amandha: And I wa I did get this for a little while and also magnesium can be deficient and so I increased my magnesium considerably. and I had to actually realize that it was my iron that was low because I would, I’m mainly vegan, vegetarian for the most part. And I’ve suffered my own self, suffered from anemia on and off for a long time.
Amandha: Be just being vegan for so long. And also your d your blood type can determine how well you absorb the iron. And I I’m a specific blood type that actually does well being vegetarian or vegan. And some people don’t do as well on that. And that’s the o’s typically anyway. That restless leg symptom is, it can be a part and parcel to an iron deficiency.
Amandha: We talked about pica hair loss as well. When a woman is pregnant, she will go through a. Period of stasis where the hair stops doing everything. It just kind of stops falling out, stops growing, just kind of, well, it can grow as well depending on your nutritional status, but it’s weird because it doesn’t fall out.
Amandha: But then after you have your baby, a lot of the hair that didn’t fall out during pregnancy can shed. So it can be kind of distressing, so keep that in mind. However, when iron stores are low, because you see in, in a pregnant woman the iron, a lot of the iron’s going to the fetus to feed the fetus.
Amandha: And what happens is the shaft of the hair kind of just. Tones down. It’s like, this is not important feature right now in this human. We’re going to decrease the hair shaft energy or the feeding of that follicle. And that will just sort of stay like that. But if you are just if you’re not pregnant and you’re in iron deficiency, eventually that hair will fall out and not grow back.
Amandha: And so we use it, we lose about a hundred hairs a day on average. And if you are in iron deficiency, that can be increased. And the main key. Feature is that it doesn’t grow back. And so you have to obviously rule other things like thyroid deficiency in that case cause that also can cause falling hair.
Amandha: Question: Do type O blood types do well as vegans? In my view, type O individuals don’t do as well as vegans as much as type A or B because they tend to need more iron available. That’s how I understand it from the information I’ve read.
Amandha: They tend to have more of a magnetic aspect. I think it has a lot to do with the shape itself, the form versus function. Form and function are very intimate, and so the form of the red blood cell affects the function and in it’s slightly different in the different blood types. And so that’s it explained in a nutshell.
Amandha: So type O individuals can have a harder time being vegan because of the iron issue. I’m generalizing, but from the studies and information I’ve read, that seems to be the pattern I have observed. Other things that can happen include mouth ulcers and a condition called cheilosis, where the lips scale and the corners crack.
Amandha: The mucosa has worn away and has allowed the inside or the ina to show through which can be very painful, obviously. And then cheilosis is when the lips scale and the corners crack. And that is a severe deficiency if you get to that stage, if your lips are doing that’s quite an quite a, not a good state to be in.
Amandha: That’s pretty low. Scaling and cracking of the lips can occur with more significant deficiency. Tinnitus and hearing changes can also occur. When the red blood cells aren’t carrying oxygen effectively to the extremities and tissues, people can feel cold and notice other symptoms.
Amandha: Thinking is not as clear as well, so concentration goes down. So think about it. The anytime you have the blood that’s not functioning properly, things suffer at the ends of you., they suffer at the fingertips and the toe tips and the hair at the right, the ends and their brain. I guess we don’t need our brains as much as we think.
Amandha: Okay?
Amandha: And, you know, these things suffer. They, They, everything is in a prioritized position in the body to keep things rolling.
Amandha: So the heart, and, you know, the bowels and the, you know, the, all the kidneys, these things are like prioritized. And so if you have iron deficiency, sorry, these things are not gonna be supported as much.
Amandha: You can still live when you can’t hear. You can still live when you can’t see, you know, these things get downgraded. So any type of symptom you might be seeing, extra floaters in the eyes, all kinds of hearing loss can. Also your change in the way your food tastes.
Amandha: So, the palate as well how you are tasting your food.
Amandha: Another sign is spoon-shaped nails. The nail itself becomes concave, like a spoon shape, and the nails don’t look right.
Amandha: I’ve seen them spoon down. I’ve seen them spoon up, but they’re they’re curling. It’s like the protein structure cannot be fed properly. So what makes curly hair different than straight hair is the sulfur. Amino acid and the way it’s laid out, right? So it’s all about protein and how the proteins are laid out that make your hair and nail skin a certain fashion and go in a certain direction.
Amandha: And that’s why I really love sulfur, DMSO, and MSM for treating hair, skin, nails, et cetera because it assists that process, but you still need the proper blood flow and supply in order to do that. I think that’s the majority of the symptoms that I went through there. We talked about the eyelid.
Amandha: We talked about the lips. Oh, also headaches. So people get headaches from these thingss. So people come to me, oh, I have headaches. Can you give me something for it? It’s like, well, there’s like only about a million things that can cause that headache. And if you really wanna heal it properly, you need to actually find the root cause of what’s causing that headache, because it could be a number of.
Amandha: So I’m not just going to see, if you go to a doctor, they’re just gonna give you an aspirin, it’s gonna suppress the symptoms, and then off you go trial a law until it comes back again. And it will. And so the whole point of holistic medicine is to get to the root cause of what’s happening and then solve it from there, which often has to do with, you know, lifestyle habits and all kinds of things that are being you’re, you know, if you’re being poison.
Daily Iron Needs, Gut Integrity, and Absorption Factors
Amandha: Now let’s talk a little bit about total body iron. On average, men have about 3.8 grams in the body and women about 2.3 grams.
Amandha: So in your total body, because obviously mo this is averaged, but most women are smaller, most men are taller. It’s just to do with that and bone structure and so forth. and so 3.8 grams, like if you were to drain it all from someone, then you’d get 3.8 grams, generally out of men average, and 2.3 grams out of a female.
Amandha: And through feces, skin, and the mucosa. Inside the mouth, vagina, and other smooth, moist surfaces, you have mucosal tissue, which is, I call the internal skin, which is also through all the way through your whole elementary canal, your whole gut system. That’s all mucosa, the first layer.
Amandha: So it’s your internal skin and then your external skin, which is a coating on it. And you lose about one milligram a day through feces, skin and mucosa. And so that’s really, where you need to be looking at to put that back in the day. And most people, if their guts are in order, they’ll absorb enough and they’ll be fine.
Amandha: But vegans have to pay a bit more attention to deficiency states as well as adolescents. People who are, you know, going through puberty also need more iron and pregnant women also, as I was saying. And then men who are very. Vegan or you know, fitness, you know, doing a lot of exercise and building, using a lot of muscle, building muscle, et cetera.
Amandha: People with higher needs may need supplementation or a very deliberate approach to diet. Things that can decrease iron absorption include problems with the gut.
Amandha: So the gut is inflamed. There’s IBS, Crohn’s, colitis, or other types of inflammation that can affect absorption. I find that many people have some level of gut dysfunction. I’ve seen this usually have to address at time and time again. And if you want to see my video on how to heal the gut, that is on YouTube at Yummy Mummy Emporium and Apothecary..
Amandha: I have a video on how to heal the gut and what I do for that. Healing the gut and making sure gut integrity is where it needs to be can help with nutrient absorption. Calcium and antacids, or anything that changes stomach pH around an iron-rich meal, can affect absorption.
Amandha: I’m talking about alkaline pH. People drinking alkaline water around meals may decrease iron absorption. What you really want to take with iron is vitamin C or another source of ascorbic acid. Certain acids can assist iron absorption, while others can inhibit it.
Amandha: So it’s a little bit complicated. Like phytic acid for example, grains actually decreases the absorption of iron and every seed, every, everything that you can plant in the ground has phytic acid over top of it. It’s a protection for the seed. And what I usually recommend to people who are trying to build their iron is just pre-soak all seeds, grains, et cetera, for 24 hours and rinse away that water.
Amandha: The plants actually love and thrive on phytic acid water, so you can give it to your. If you’re a grower, if you grow crops, whatever, you could put it with your crops. They really appreciate that. But with us, we, we do need phytic acid, but not that much. And most people are eating way too much grain and not pre-sprouting it or draining the phytic acid from it.
Amandha: And that can inhibit iron absorption. So just be weary of that and how much you’re eating. And that’s the iron. Irony, that’s the irony of taking fortified iron grains,, that’s just silly because the iron is, you’re adding iron, that’s great, but then you’re phytic acid, so you’re not really absorbing that very well.
Amandha: So getting more grains is not really the answer to the solution. But calcium, taking calcium with iron is a surefire way to not absorb your iron and people on antacids are in a very dangerous, precarious position of being iron deficient as well. And I never really would ever recommend those cuz they have a whole host of other issues as well.
Amandha: And they’re also suppressive and they’re not dealing with the. Fact that they probably have low stomach acid and that’s why they’re getting heartburn and splash back is because they don’t have the right pH to actually close the valve, which needs to be lower. Like a lower number, not a higher number, which antacids will give in the pH meter.
Amandha: Let me get back to my notes. Zinc can also interfere with iron absorption, and so can high levels of manganese. Iron is absorbed primarily in the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine.
Amandha: And that area needs to be the correct pH for that absorption. What happens is that stomach acid and the food mixture move through the sphincter into the duodenum. The pancreas then contributes alkaline material to buffer that strong acid so the pH is appropriate for the next stage of digestion.
Amandha: That chyme then gives feedback to the upper sphincters and upper centers to shut off, and things will move along slowly, and you’ll get peristalsis in the next level. Of the intestinal tract, and that will move along and absorb everything properly.
Amandha: But if that pH is off, you’re not going to get the ideal absorption, and then the rest will just be discarded through the colon. In poo? Yes, in poo okay. No, that’s what happens. And if you want maximum absorption, you need the right pH. So usually what I have to ask people to do is to work with both sodium bicarbonate and apple cider vinegar to rebalance out their assets on both sides of the duodenum-stomach boundary, because both are messed up.
Amandha: So I usually ask people to take one half to one teaspoon of non-aluminum baking soda in warm to hot water, almost like making a tea and drink that first thing in the morning or on an empty on an empty stomach. And, oh, hi Patty.
Amandha: Yes, I am in Facebook jail. So, I’m borrowing an account to get on here you can’t keep me down forever face crack.
Amandha: Anyway, the chyme moves from the stomach into the small intestine. The pancreas contributes alkaline material that buffers the strong stomach acid, and the pH of the small intestine affects digestion and absorption.
Amandha: That supports the pancreatic buffering process, and your microbiome also responds to pH. In my view, the goal is to help reset those pH conditions.
Amandha: Now, if you have hypertension, I would be very careful. With how you are doing this process because that extra sodium could affect your blood pressure.
Amandha: So just be aware of that and you would wanna do it more short term, and I would probably do less dosage. And there are other alkaline salts that you can use instead of sodium bi carb that you can purchase like something called basic tabs you can get from Pascoe and they have a mix of different salts, Alkaline salts, and you can take that on an empty stomach, but I would again put it in warm water so it does not sit in the stomach.
Amandha: You want it to go past the stomach, and that’s why you do water.
Amandha: Okay?
Amandha: Then after that you can take in cold water, which will sit in the stomach a quarter to half squeezed lemon. And make sure your water’s either spring water, distilled water reverse osmosis water, some sort of good water that you trust, not tap water.
Amandha: And that will then you can use apple cider vinegar if you wish, in that water. Usually with apple cider vinegar as one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. Two, one teaspoon of water. So one-to-one. And then you should eat pretty soon after that. And that will help balance out the gut right there.
Blood Loss, Oxalates, Iron-Rich Foods, and Vitamin C
Amandha: Let’s return to factors that can contribute to iron deficiency. If people have cancers or tumors that are associated with bleeding, that could contribute to iron deficiency. Some bladder diseases or ulcers can also cause blood loss.
Amandha: Again, it’s like a silent type of bleeding. Diverticulitis can also be at risk for that, for the same reason. So I just wanted to mention that again. The other thing that affects the absorption of iron is oxalic acid. And that’s in rhubarb. Tomatoes, spinach. Oh, we’ll talk about spinach. Chocolate.
Amandha: Okay, chocolate. No. See, chocolate has a lot of magnesium. And magnesium and iron or not? When you put them in together, they’re good. When you have enough of both, but not on the absorption level of things. But the, so if you’re wor with the chocolate just, you know,. Too bad I’m eating chocolate. Okay. No, I’m just kidding.
Amandha: I don’t care. I’m eating the chocolate. I’ll go eat the sand and the chocolate my pica. But you know, I think the whole point with that is just the right timing.
Amandha: With spinach, if you quickly boil it for about a minute, the oxalic acid content changes and you may improve mineral availability.
Amandha: So if you’re working. Food-based absorption of spinach. You can’t just go ahead and eat it raw, which sucks, especially for raw food vegans, it’s kind of a damn right because like your whole point is you’re trying to eat raw. So can’t. But just if you flash boil it, you’ll still get, you know, a lot of your benefits out of your spinach.
Amandha: You’ll still get many of the benefits, but you’ll reduce some of the oxalate burden. If you pair iron-rich foods with vitamin C, you can improve non-heme iron absorption. For a menstruating woman, about 18 milligrams a day is the common dietary target.
Amandha: For adult menstruating women, the common dietary target is about 18 milligrams a day, while pregnancy increases the requirement to about 27 milligrams a day. Prenatal vitamins often contain iron, although they can sometimes be constipating.
Amandha: And now we’re gonna start talking about food, where you get it from food, and then we’re gonna talk about supplements in a minute. Right. Okay. So I think I touched on everything. You just have some notes here.
Amandha: So where do you get it from then? From your food. Right. And I mean, our food is so damaged.
Amandha: Our soils are damaged. They’re doing so many crazy experiments on us humans that I don’t well, we have a lot of problems with our soils and the industrial fertilizers and all of these heavy metals and things that get in there and. And that also causes a lot of interference in our proper absorption and the gut integrity and all of these things.
Amandha: Food sources I discuss include cabbage, kohlrabi, broccoli, bell peppers, sweet potatoes, tropical fruits, kale, white beans, kidney beans, lentils, chickpeas, and peanuts.
Amandha: Even though there’s an, there’s the, you know, there’s acids and there’s potential toxins, aflatoxins in the peanuts. If you get a good organic peanut, you should be okay. One cup of white beans, for example, contains about eight milligrams, which I describe as roughly 44% of daily iron needs. So that’s not too bad.
Amandha: If you have a good, if you have good gut integrity and you have a good probiotic, you’re also taking then that, you know, eating beans, lentils, and so forth, you should be doing okay for your iron levels.
Amandha: Leafy greens also contain iron. With spinach, be aware of oxalic acid. Seaweed can also contain iron, and cooked spinach is another option. The important question is how much of that iron you actually absorb.
Amandha: That is the question, right? But that carries enough for the day. Nuts and seeds that are pre soaked. Sunflower seeds, cashews, pistachios, almonds, and pine nuts are all very high in iron. So these are foods that you can pull into your lifestyle more. So eat lots of citrus and orange with these foods. You know, you can squeeze lemons and grapefruit and whatever on salads that contain leafy greens to assist the absorption.
Amandha: These kinds of habits are good all around. You know, on top of it, right? Olives as well thank God cause I really love olives, and I crave olive, so maybe that’s for me not eating really meat very much perhaps that’s, you know, that’s why I do crave all those like crazy and I’ll just sit and eat a whole bunch of them.
Iron Supplements, Spatone, Lucky Iron Fish, Botanicals, and Ferrodona
Amandha: Okay, I think I’ve gone through that. Now let’s go through some supplements and non-constipating options. I have a bug here and it’s bugging me. It’s spring and it’s not even that warm, but I already have bugs in the house.
Amandha: I have a couple of supplements that I carried in my store that I liked. I was using a Genestra liquid iron product and tolerated it very well, but after changes in ownership I stopped bringing it in and started looking for alternatives.
Amandha: One that really does help build iron stores in a nice way is called Spatone. Now, spatone is an iron rich water. It’s actually a natural water, and that would, you know, an iron. Iron-rich water is good like some people’s wells. You know, have a considerable amount of iron and their iron levels are just fine.
Amandha: But the issue around well water that I’m seeing is there’s other. Inorganic minerals in the water that’s leading to sedimentation in their joints and they’re getting a lot of arthritis from that. And you really need a good gut microbiome in order to process inorganic minerals into organically used minerals or to process them properly out of the body.
Amandha: And usually for people like that, I put them on distilled water for a little while to drain out extra salutes in the joint cavities that are sitting there causing crepitus and other.. Okay. Yellow dock as a botanical. There’s lots of botanicals. I like yellow dock with nettle. Nettle has a lot of vitamin C and yellow
Amandha: Dock has iron, so it helps absorption of that. So there are botanicals that you can utilize and have, as you know, in general to assist you with that. And then there’s something called the Lucky Iron Fish, which is an iron fish which I’m going to, I just talked with these people. I’m gonna bring this product into the store and it’s like a little, it’s called the Lucky Iron Fish, and it’s just a little cute fish that’s made of iron.
Amandha: and, or it’s coated and you put it in your cooking. So you can cook with cast iron, but you could also, like, if you make a lot of soups and stews and things like this, you can put the Lucky Iron Fish in and it will last about five years. And it, the iron will eventually wear away on the fish. And it has that smile on it.
Amandha: So when the smile goes away, then that is the indicator that you need to replace the fish. And what’s cool about this company, which it’s Canadian company, which is also. They will donate one fish to a country that’s in. that’s having a dietary issue. You know, a poverty stricken country. They, so if you buy one, they will donate one to one of these countries across the world.
Amandha: So that’s one approach: Spatone as a natural-source iron water, the Lucky Iron Fish or cast-iron cooking, and botanicals that support iron intake or absorption. Another product I like from Pekana is called Ferrodona.
Amandha: Ferrodona is a spagyric/homeopathic product. It is marketed for support in anemia, low red blood cells, blood loss, and iron metabolism.
Amandha: Another sign I associate with low iron is increased infections. The red blood cells go to the spleen and then also go and feed the lymph nodes, and that’s what triggers a white blood cell formation. So if you have low white blood cells, you then you’re also going to have issues processing you know, foreign matter in your body.
Amandha: Ferrodona is a low-dose homeopathic/spagyric preparation. I use it as another option within this framework.
Amandha: And so that is also a very helpful way to go about that. And adults take 15 to 20 drops two to three times a day for this process. And then also Ferrum Phos, a tissue salt is also very supportive to the natural absorption from your food. So if you’re getting enough of the tissue salt in your day-to-day, usually taking about five tablets melted under the tongue you know, up to five times a day, that can really assist your absorption through your food.
Amandha: And and like I said, also healing the gut Is a big concern with absorbing iron, so making sure your gut integrity is intact. Like I said, I have a video on YouTube for that so you can watch. Another thing, another superfood. We mentioned spirulina, but another superfood that has a lot going for it that a lot of people take for zinc levels is moringa.
Amandha: Moringa is often taken for zinc. If you’re using moringa and also taking an iron-rich supplement or food such as spirulina, I would separate them rather than taking everything at the same time.
Audience Q&A: Copper, Zinc, PPIs, and Mineral Balance
Amandha: Okay, so I’m just gonna see. Yes, copper does. Copper is actually copper’s kind of interesting because copper’s very vital to the body, but copper balances out your mineral use. But mainly what I’m seeing is like I have a one woman. Sorry,. Somebody’s trying to get a hold of me. I have, there’s one of ’em, she has excess iron in her body and so, so she’s actually using copper to reduce excess iron and balance her iron.
Amandha: So I’d just be careful if you’re using copper vessels, if you’re iron deficient because they can actually drain that. From my knowledge, I haven’t done like deeper research on it for anemia states, but I do know that it’s used for hemochromatosis for people who have excess iron in their blood that can help balance out.
Amandha: So they use copper vessels to get iron. They can help pull extra iron out. So it’s an iron balancing wave of going about it. But just be very aware that all of the ions in the body, they have to be in balance. And so they all interplay. Once everything’s in the body, they interact with one another. They’re all part of different co-factors that push certain processes and support the body and support defenses and all of these rebuilding of things.
Amandha: And so I just wanna be always in balance with all of these things. But I would say mainly we’re seeing, like for zinc, I see more zinc, copper balance as being like people who aren’t getting enough zinc, then they need to make sure that the copper and the zinc is in a good balance. And I actually have copper bracelets for that, that people can just wear.
Amandha: Question about PPIs: proton pump inhibitors change stomach acid and can affect iron absorption. In my practice, I look at whether medications may be contributing to the overall picture.
Amandha: So on the other slower stuff of metabolic process, right? So. Absolutely I mean, you’re gonna have trouble there. And usually what I do when I see people are like, just, okay, let’s just routinely take you off the drugs, manage your symptoms as we go, and then we’ll see where you’re at and then we’ll treat where you know what you need there.
Closing: Research, IV Iron, Other Deficiencies, and Self-Education
Amandha: And that’s really the way to go. Okay. So if there’s no other questions, I think I’ll wrap it up. Cause I do have a consult,, and maybe that one is them calling. So hopefully it wasn’t going over time here, but they hope that answers at least, you know, gives you a general summary. on iron deficiency issues signs and symptoms, how to increase your iron naturally and.
Amandha: you know, how to navigate some of the problems around this and gives you other things and tips and ideas to go and research on your own, because I always encourage that, you know, you learn something from someone and then really it’s for empowerment. Like you’re learning to be empowered for how to treat your own body.
Amandha: And that’s what I always preach.. So take the knowledge and run with it. You know, like, like do the next leg of research for yourself and Yeah, and always for me, I go to back to the biochemistry of the body and I go to studies, like I was looking up different studies on. Absorption of like, I found a study on magnesium, taking magnesium with iron, what happens and magnesium either decrease the iron absorption and it was all based on the acidity, so, so what it was saying in that study, what it was telling me about the body was that it has, your body or stomach has to be the correct pH in order for maximum iron absorption.
Amandha: That is why I place so much emphasis on gut integrity and pH when thinking about iron absorption. I haven’t gone deeply into iron injections or IV iron in this talk, although I was trained on iron injections in school.
Amandha: Iron injections have to be administered skillfully. People with severe anemia can sometimes go this route or need other medical treatment, although in this discussion I’ve focused on food, absorption, and less invasive approaches.
Amandha: The other thing we didn’t really talk about was other red blood cell disorders, like, you know, B12 deficiency, folic acid deficiency and stuff.
Amandha: But maybe I’ll do another talk on that another time. Cause there’s other issues with the red blood cell carrying capacity that can be, you know, an issue, especially in this modern world where we have a lot of gene fragmented problems.
Amandha: We have a lot of toxicity that’s causing genetic dysfunction. And mitochondrial dysfunction that’s leading to other issues. So that’s a bigger and different topic for now. So we’ll leave it and my website is yummy mummy emporium.org or yummy mummy apothecary.com and hope, see you all again soon.
Amandha: And thanks for all your love and have a beautiful day.
Amandha: It’s sunny yeah, I know so go get some sun I will be.
Amandha: All right, well, enjoy the rest of your day and thanks for liking, subscribing, commenting in a nice way, et cetera, et cetera, and supporting, you know, the healing of our world and educating people into their own empowering.
