DMSO Myth Busting Series – Part 2: DMSO Toxicity

DMSO Myth-Busting Part 2: DMSO Toxicity

DMSO Toxicity: Video Overview

In Part Two of her DMSO Myth-Busting Series, Amandha Vollmer (ADV) addresses another common concern surrounding dimethyl sulfoxide: Is DMSO toxic? The way that DMSO research is conducted can change how study results should be interpreted, especially when extracted tissues or cell lines are compared with the response of a complete living system.

ADV discusses how DMSO behaves when used topically or orally and why understanding its transdermal properties, concentration and interactions with other substances can help you approach its use more intelligently.

Watch Part Two now to hear ADV’s perspective on “DMSO toxicity” and learn how to look more carefully at the research before allowing fear-based claims to shape your understanding of this remedy!

What You’ll Learn About DMSO Toxicity

  • Why Amandha distinguishes clinical and living-system studies from isolated cell and tissue research
  • Her response to claims about DMSO, mitochondria, and cellular toxicity
  • How DMSO’s use in laboratory and cryopreservation research is discussed
  • Gastrointestinal upset and skin reactivity associated with higher exposures in the discussion
  • DMSO’s relationship with water and the temporary skin changes Amandha describes
  • Why substances present on the skin matter when working with a transdermal carrier
  • How Amandha recommends evaluating the methods and materials sections of DMSO studies
  • Her broader claims concerning skin, scars, tissue repair, and toxin removal

Important Context & Safety

Educational context: This video presents Amandha Vollmer’s perspective that DMSO is non-toxic and that some laboratory toxicity findings should not be directly extrapolated to ordinary human use. Human safety evidence does not support treating DMSO as completely free of adverse effects. A systematic review covering 109 human studies found that gastrointestinal and skin reactions were among the most commonly reported adverse reactions and that adverse effects were related to dose, although most reported reactions were mild and transient.

Medical emergencies: Information in this video should not be used to delay emergency assessment or treatment for symptoms of stroke, heart attack, serious head injury or another medical emergency.

Introduction: DMSO Toxicity and Study Context

Amandha: Welcome to my DMSO myth-busting series, part two: DMSO toxicity.

Amandha: DMSO is non-toxic. Let’s just start there. Unfortunately, there are a lot of bad actors out there who want to frighten you and scare you away from using this natural distillate extracted from trees that is extremely safe and very, very useful and helpful to human health.

Amandha: Part of the issue is the way that DMSO is studied. There are a lot of disingenuous people out there who will mix and match and cherry-pick studies, and then try to fearmonger you. So we want to stay away from that information. Anyone who is talking negatively about it or fearmongering, they do not have your best interest at heart, and I advise you not to follow their advice.

Amandha: Now, when it comes to DMSO and toxicity, there are a couple of important distinctions. First of all, you want to look at clinical studies. We want to understand DMSO as used in the living body, whether it’s an animal, human, or whatnot, okay?

In Vitro Research, Living Systems, and Mitochondria

Amandha: What happens is that because DMSO is so widely used in laboratory research and cryogenic-based studies, they’re looking at toxicity through the lens of extracted tissue or cell lines removed from the living system.

Amandha: That is a very different interaction than what’s happening in an entire living system where you have detox organs, blood flow, a lymphatic system, et cetera.

Amandha: One of the claims that has been made by bad actors is that it damages or does something negative to your mitochondria, and that is absolutely, 100 percent, not true, okay? They are taking studies of cell lines in Petri dishes that have various effects depending on the percentages of DMSO used.

Amandha: Why they’re doing those studies is that they want to know how much they can use for certain cell lines and tissues to preserve them and then use them in their studies or use them for organ transplants, right? And, of course, they want to know how toxic that organ can become if it’s infused with a certain amount of DMSO, and then what happens afterward when the tissue is put into another body, okay? That’s very different than you using it topically or orally.

Skin Reactions, Water, and Handling Considerations

Amandha: We have research that shows there are no negative side effects whatsoever. In fact, the only issues that have been seen are with higher doses, with some gastrointestinal upset or some skin reactivity because, as you know, DMSO is transdermal.

Amandha: Depending on how you apply it to the skin or what you’re mixing it with, you can have varying results because it is opening the tissue in multiple ways, as I’ve discussed in my book, Healing with DMSO. It will then allow other substances of low molecular weight into the skin with it.

Amandha: For example, you could get a swelling of the tissue if you use quite a high dose of DMSO and then you submerge in water because DMSO loves water. Water is attracted to it. In fact, the relationship between water and DMSO is very important because that’s how it propels through the system.

Amandha: When you have a lot of DMSO on your hands, for example, and you wash your hands or take a bath right afterward, you could get sort of waterlogged, wrinkly skin because it’s absorbing a lot of extra water into that tissue. It’s a temporary response. It has no permanent damage.

Amandha: Those are your biggest sorts of risks when using it, other than, of course, blending it with unwanted things like metals and so forth. You don’t want to mix DMSO with toxins and then put it on your skin, but to me that’s kind of a no-brainer.

Safety Claims, Applications, and Closing

Amandha: As far as other toxicity, you’re going to find studies. Just look at the methods section, the materials section, and read the entire study. If they have taken tissue out of the body and put it in test tubes or Petri dishes and they’re playing around with DMSO, that does not pertain to you. It’s irrelevant information when it comes to knowledge about DMSO safety, okay? That’s very, very important.

Amandha: DMSO is completely non-toxic. It is completely effective for repairing skin, for healing the body, and removing toxins. It is very helpful to remove things like wrinkles, scar tissue, various skin ailments or rashes or injuries, and, of course, repairing bones, repairing any type of tissue, and removing toxins from the body. There’s a whole host.

Amandha: I’ll do a series on the benefits and what DMSO does, although I’ve done that again and again for the last 10 years on my website, Yummy.Doctor, where you can find my previous DMSO series and education. All the other information that I have is in my book, which I highly recommend if you’re new to it and starting out.

Amandha: If you have any other questions about toxicity, please put them in the comment section and I’ll try to answer them for you.
