Is Coconut Oil Right for Your Skin?
Is Coconut Oil Right for Your Skin?
Coconut Oil for Skin: Video Overview
Coconut oil does not work the same for every skin type. Amandha Vollmer (ADV) explains why it can leave some skin feeling drier, especially in winter, and how applying another oil first can help coconut oil act as a protective barrier over top.

Amandha shares a practical look at coconut oil and why it can work well for some skin types but not for everyone.
She explains that coconut oil acts as a barrier on the skin. For people who naturally produce more oil, this may work well. For drier skin, especially during the winter, coconut oil can sometimes leave the skin feeling even more dry.
Amandha prefers to apply another oil, such as olive oil, before using coconut oil. This gives the coconut oil something to protect rather than applying it directly over skin that is already lacking oil.
The key is to understand your skin type, notice how your skin responds, and adjust how you use coconut oil accordingly.

Important Context & Safety
Educational context: This clip presents Amandha Vollmer’s personal skincare experience and her explanation of how coconut oil may behave differently depending on skin type and natural oil production. She describes her own skin as partly oily and partly dry and explains that coconut oil does not work well for her when applied by itself.
Amandha suggests applying another oil first when additional moisture is needed and then using coconut oil as a barrier over those oils. She also emphasizes through her own experience that some people respond well to coconut oil while others may find that it leaves their skin feeling drier. The clip presents this as an individualized skincare consideration rather than a single routine for every skin type.

Coconut Oil, Skin Type, and Natural Oils
Amandha: I just want to mention coconut oil. Coconut oil depends on your skin type.
Amandha: My skin type is a little bit drier. I have a bit of an oily T-zone and a little bit drier skin on the cheeks, especially at the base of the cheeks. The rest of my body also usually needs moisturizing after I get out of the shower.
Amandha: So I cannot use coconut oil by itself because I do not produce enough natural oils for the coconut oil to control on top. Coconut oil is a barrier. It creates a barrier for your skin, which is fine, but I usually suggest putting another oil on first before you use coconut oil, because then it can protect the oils you already put on.
When Coconut Oil Works Better in a Skincare Routine
Amandha: Unless you already have natural sebum production that is on the higher scale. A lot of people with more melanin produce more natural oils, and coconut oil is often well loved where it is grown and by the people who live there. It works great for them and keeps the skin lush.
Amandha: But up here in the winter, it can be the opposite. It can dry out the skin because it will only trap air underneath, not oils. If air is trapped underneath, it can cause problems and dry out the skin.
Amandha: So some people swear by coconut oil, and other people, like me, cannot use it by itself. The only time I can use it is if I have already moisturized with something like olive oil, or I have already used one of my products.
