Amandha shares how she approaches exfoliation as part of a gentle and realistic skincare routine.
The skin is continually regenerating and shedding older cells. As we age, dry skin can accumulate more easily, which can make regular cleansing and exfoliation useful. The goal is not to scrub the skin aggressively, but to gently remove this buildup without irritating or damaging the skin underneath.
One of Amandha’s preferred tools is a konjac sponge, a plant-based sponge that softens when wet and contains tiny pores. She uses it to gently massage and exfoliate the face without the roughness of more aggressive methods, making it especially useful when the skin is sensitive.
Her routine also leaves room for real life. A full cleanse and exfoliation may not happen every day, and it does not need to. On busy or exhausting days, Amandha may simply use a cleansing oil. She generally aims for a fuller cleansing and exfoliation routine several times each week, adjusting it to the time and energy she has available.
The practice is gentle, consistent care rather than forcing a perfect routine every day.

Important Context & Safety
Educational context: This clip presents Amandha Vollmer’s personal skincare routine and her explanation of gentle exfoliation. She describes the skin as continually shedding and regenerating and explains that she prefers gentle exfoliation rather than more intense methods.
Amandha specifically cautions against over-exfoliation and discusses using a soft konjac sponge, including for people with sensitive or rosacea-prone skin. The clip also briefly mentions using DMSO and natural oils after accessing the underlying tissues, but it does not provide a complete DMSO application, concentration or handling protocol. Her stated routine of cleansing and exfoliating about four times per week reflects her personal routine rather than a required schedule for every person.

Why Gentle Exfoliation Matters
Amandha: Exfoliation is also something – maybe you don’t have time to do it every day, and that’s totally fine. But I put it into my routine because here’s what happens with skin: the skin layers build up, and new skin is always being generated underneath. Then the old skin has to flake off eventually. If you were under a microscope and you rubbed your skin, you would see it all go into the air.
Amandha: You would see all these particles coming off your skin, the scaly stuff flaking off. We are always shedding. We’re shedding hair, we’re shedding skin. It’s always regenerating. So when you can exfoliate very gently, you don’t do damage to the underlying skin, and you can have more access to the underlying tissues when you’re using something like DMSO or when you’re cleansing with natural oils.
Amandha: You don’t want to over-exfoliate. If you’re going to salons and they do these really intense exfoliation methods, they can cause long-term damage. If you were to look under a microscope at what your skin looks like, you might not be happy with that.
Konjac Sponge and Sensitive Skin
Amandha: Your skin naturally sheds every 28 to 40 days. But as we age, dry skin can build up and become more layered, so as we age we want to cleanse more. What I use is a natural sponge. It’s called konjac. It’s an actual plant, and eventually you can put it in the compost.
Amandha: It’s hard, and then when you get it wet it becomes almost gel-like. It has these micropores in it, so when you’re massaging your face with it, it doesn’t scratch and it’s not rough. It will slightly alkalize, but not intensely, because you’re also putting your acids back afterward with your creams and things.
Amandha: There’s nothing else in it. It removes the dead cells, gets your skin glowing, and gets blood flow to the area. This is like an old Korean beauty secret. Especially if you have really sensitive skin or rosacea and stuff, I really like these exfoliation tools. I find them really helpful.
Keeping the Routine Realistic
Amandha: If you don’t wash your face every day, that’s okay. If I’m super tired and I had a crazy busy day and just couldn’t do my routine, it’s not always reasonable with our lifestyles. At least I grab my cleansing oil and do that. If that’s the only thing I have the energy to do by the end of the day, that’s what I put on my face.
Amandha: I don’t really wear makeup a lot anyway. If I wear makeup, I have to get it off my face, so I will always wash that off. But if I’m exhausted, maybe I wasn’t out in a lot of pollution and I was just doing computer work or something, I’ll just use the cleansing oil. Don’t feel bad if you don’t deal with your skin every day. We’re just trying to do our best here.
Amandha: I do like a full cleanse, wash, and exfoliation about four times a week. I try to keep it at least there. Sometimes I’ll do it more, but again, be realistic with your lifestyle. I usually do it at night before bed, but sometimes I’ll do it in the morning and sometimes I’ll be inspired to do it in the middle of the day if I have energy and a moment. Do it whenever works for you. Okay.
