Introduction: DMSO, Plastics, and Storage

Amandha: Hi everyone. Amandha Vollmer here. I want to talk with you today about DMSO and plastics and other materials, because lately I’m getting a lot of questions about what materials are safe to use with DMSO, especially plastics.

Amandha: In the first video I ever did on DMSO, I have to admit I had quite a bias about plastics, and I still do, mainly because I care about the Earth. I never really wanted to use DMSO creams or anything I was making in plastic at all. I had to succumb to certain industry standards because of costs and shipping arrangements, since glass is so easy to break. For the most part, I still try to create and contain the things I produce in glass.

Amandha: For example, the DMSO hair-regrowth spray I try to contain in glass. What has happened now is that there is a worldwide shortage of glass sprayer bottles, so I have actually had to purchase plastic ones, which is unfortunate. But do not despair, because in my first video I was really hardcore against plastics: it’s bad, we don’t use it, why would you do that?

Amandha: When it comes to storing pure DMSO, definitely you would want to store it in glass. I would only sell it to you in glass and produce it in a glass container, because when things are sitting for long periods of time at the highest concentration, to me that makes the most logical sense. Even though I know you can purchase pure DMSO in plastic containers in a lot of different places.

Amandha: In my book, Healing with DMSO, starting on pages 43 and 44, I go into materials and reactivity with DMSO so that you can feel a bit more comfortable with what you can blend and mix with the products.

Amandha: Keep in mind that you are probably going to be diluting a lot of the DMSO or blending it with other things, so it is going to have a different level of reactivity under those conditions. You want to take that into consideration. Always err on the side of caution, but always remember that knowledge is power.

Compatible Plastics and Material Reactivity

Amandha: One of the things I had to do while researching the book was find out which plastics were inert, or non-reactive, with DMSO and which ones were reactive. I went into this at length in the book, and in the references you can see my sources and where I went to find that information.

Amandha: Being a creator of DMSO blends and having worked with DMSO for quite a number of years, I can also see what is very reactive and what is not from my own experience. What I found is that many sprayer bottles and plastic containers being manufactured now are mainly high-density or low-density polyethylene, or polypropylene, and those are materials I consider safe and inert with DMSO.

Amandha: When it comes to DMSO, we are talking about chemistry. When one chemical substance interacts with another chemical substance, whether it is soft, malleable, or liquid, you are going to see different levels of reactivity. DMSO is non-reactive with the following, and I will read it right from my book: high-density polyethylene, low-density polyethylene, nylon, polyethylene terephthalate or PETE, polypropylene, and PTFE, which is polytetrafluoroethylene.

Amandha: PETE is what I use in a lot of my jars and containers. For example, when I make Face Lift in a Jar, I use glass for the smaller sizes, but for the largest size I had to move into a plastic container. PETE is also recyclable. If you can reuse the vessel a few times, that is what I like to do, and when it is finally time to get rid of it, ideally you can recycle it properly. The number on the bottom will tell you how to recycle the vessel.

Amandha: Polypropylene is also a material I consider safe, and PTFE is completely inert with DMSO at any concentration. That gives us a good range of certain plastics we can work with while feeling confident that the DMSO is not breaking those plastics down and leaching them into itself.

Amandha: The other thing I found interesting is that a lot of plastic particles are quite large or heavy. DMSO does have a carry limit in terms of molecular weight and how much it can take through the skin into the body. So even in a worst-case scenario where something is breaking down, I consider the likelihood of those particular materials coming through the skin to be quite low.

Amandha: Where it gets more complicated is with polycarbonate, polystyrene or Styrofoam, certain silicones, and polyvinyl chloride or PVC.

Nitrile Glove Demonstration and Home Material Testing

Amandha: I have an experiment for you. I have these nitrile gloves, and I have DMSO here with me. I am going to show you how it breaks the glove apart, and it is really quite immediate.

Amandha: If you are not sure about a material—if you have a product and you do not know whether it is rubber or what kind of material it is—you can do a simple test. Take the item you want to test, put a small amount of DMSO in a bowl or cup, and soak a small part of the item in the DMSO for up to 24 hours.

Amandha: You can also test the substance you are planning to put into that material. Maybe you made a cream, an eye drop, or another blend and you want to test the container. Put some of the blend on the material or soak the material in it, wait, and then check whether it has discoloured or broken down. Things may begin to soften or melt, and sometimes you can tell right away. It is prudent to give the chemical reaction time to occur.

Amandha: I will show you what the nitrile glove does. You do not want to wear this kind of glove with DMSO, because this is a very thin plastic. Think about thin, weak, fragile plastics of certain compounds, and then think about rigid, well-formed structural plastics. The rigid structural plastics tend to be on the safer side as far as interacting with DMSO.

Amandha: I have a small container with a syringe. I am going to pull some DMSO into the syringe, put a glove on, and show you what happens to the glove. When I make a lot of my creams and blends, I need to protect my hands while squeezing herbs and doing similar work. With DMSO, I have to use either a cloth glove or wash my hands and use my bare hand, because I cannot use this nitrile glove. You will see why in a second.

Amandha: I am going to pour a couple of drops of 99.995% DMSO onto the glove and rub it around. I can already feel heat, because DMSO is exothermic. What we will start to see is the colour coming off the glove, and it will basically rip right through it.

Amandha: As it continues to get hotter, I can feel the heat coming through. We will give it a minute and it will basically fall apart. I remember working with DMSO once while wearing a glove like this, and it ripped into a big piece. I thought, okay, I guess that is one of the unsafe ones.

Amandha: Give it a few minutes, because that is all it can take to realize something is wrong and that the DMSO is starting to break the material apart. When DMSO is blended with creams, herbs, or other substances, I have also seen that speed up the breakdown of the glove.

Amandha: I am already seeing a lot of thinning in the glove, so I am going to add a little more to accelerate it. It is completely discoloured, and some of the colour is coming onto the paper towel. That is not a material I consider safe to use. If you are using anything thin or synthetic, double-check that you have the right product. This particular plastic is not stable with DMSO.

Amandha: I am going to take the glove off and let the process continue, and I will show you at the end how it breaks down.

Metals, Jewellery, and DMSO Compatibility

Amandha: When it comes to metals or other products, you also want to be aware that some can be problematic. For example, nickel, lead, cadmium, and aluminium are metals I would be cautious about around DMSO. I do not want those metals being dissolved into the DMSO and then available to be carried through the skin.

Amandha: If you have a necklace on, check the clasp. The clasp is often nickel-plated if it is not stainless steel, pure silver, gold, or another material you know is compatible. Be aware of bracelets and other jewellery as well. If jewellery has a cord in it, make sure the cord is not a thin plastic or another material that can break down.

Amandha: Be aware of rust and other broken-down metals and materials. I also want to mention that DMSO can react with copper, iron, and tin.

Silicone Implants, Botox, and Other Body Materials

Amandha: A lot of women ask me, ‘I have silicone breast implants. Can I use DMSO?’ Different implants can contain different materials, so I usually ask them to find out from their doctor or surgeon exactly what was used. You want to know what you are dealing with.

Amandha: If you have a silicone implant in your body, my general approach is to dilute the DMSO properly and use it as far away from the area as possible. I have women who have been using it for quite a number of years without an issue, but they are not applying it directly onto the breast tissue. They may be using it on the leg or using a face cream, for example.

Amandha: If you take pure silicone and pure DMSO and put them together in a spot test, over time you can see the silicone soften and become more malleable, similar to what is happening with the glove. That tells you there is interaction with the material.

Amandha: If you have breast implants and you are not sure about the materials, find out from the surgeon what was used. I would say a 50% DMSO solution or under would be a prudent starting point, and use it away from that part of the body. Styrofoam is a no-no.

Amandha: Botox was the other thing I wanted to mention. I had a conversation with an esthetician yesterday who absolutely abhors Botox. She suggested hyaluronic acid, and from that conversation I decided I would look at purchasing a specific small-particle hyaluronic acid and making a DMSO-hyaluronic acid product.

Amandha: Everyone wants to have perfect features because we are conditioned by magazines, television, and culture to think we have to look a certain way forever. We are not allowed to age, get wrinkles, or have saggy parts. It is quite a strange culture, although I understand the pressure people feel.

Amandha: The problem with Botox, in my view, is that it is a neurotoxin. The face does not move because the nerves are being affected, and I believe that has repercussions for the rest of the body.

Amandha: I have also had an experience reported to me by a woman who used my Face Lift in a Jar after spending a lot of money on Botox and fillers. She told me that her wrinkles were fading, but that the Botox effect was also gone. From that experience, I concluded that the DMSO product and Botox do not go well together. In my view, you either suppress an action of the body or support a healing action; the two do not mix well and may negate each other. So with Botox and those types of treatments, I do not recommend combining them with DMSO.

Stainless Steel, Pacemakers, Cataract Surgery, and Eye-Use Cautions

Amandha: People also ask me about other implants and metals. Stainless steel is inert, so if you have stainless-steel parts, that is a material I am generally more comfortable with. At the same time, these are foreign objects in the body, so every situation should be assessed case by case.

Amandha: For example, I may feel comfortable with someone using Peace Cream, which has about a 30% DMSO allotment, or Dandelion lotion, which has about a 25% allotment. But I usually suggest applying away from the area of an implant rather than directly on it, at least to start, and making sure everything is going well.

Amandha: If you are not sure what has been put inside your body, ask the surgeon. They should be able to tell you whether there are plastic parts or metals other than stainless steel.

Amandha: You also have to think chemically about the difference between an outside-the-body scenario in air and an inside-the-body scenario in blood and tissue. Materials can have different reactivities in those different environments. Ultimately, we would need proper scientific studies that go through these situations step by step for different implants and devices.

Amandha: If you have a pacemaker or you have had cataract surgery, I generally shy away from higher concentrations of DMSO because there could theoretically be an issue over time. We do not know one hundred percent. It depends on the individual, the concentration of DMSO, circulation, and many other factors.

Amandha: My golden rule is to use a low concentration, start slowly, and work up. Use it away from an area where there is something you are unsure about.

Amandha: If you have had cataract surgery, I do not recommend using DMSO eye drops in the eye. I have seen a case where the lens became blurred after DMSO drops were used following cataract surgery. I was not able to find out whether the lens later recovered, so I do not know the outcome. If someone has experienced that and the blurring later corrected, I would be interested in that feedback because I am always trying to gather more information about different concentrations and alterations that have been made to the body.

Amandha: When in doubt, do more research and check. For the most part, harder materials that the body has already accepted are different from pouring pure DMSO directly onto a material in open air. If you apply DMSO on your arm and you have a breast implant, or you have hardware in your ankle and apply DMSO on your knee, that is not the same exposure as the direct glove demonstration. The chemistry inside the body is different, so I still try to be prudent.

Glove-Test Result and Building Confidence with DMSO

Amandha: Here is the glove now. It is starting to tear, and it is completely ripped. That shows you that the DMSO is breaking down and weakening the material. In my view, it also means that some of the material has been taken up into the DMSO and could become available for the body to absorb.

Amandha: That is one of the reasons I was excited when I was asked to write Healing with DMSO. I wanted people to have enough knowledge to feel confident using DMSO in their lives, to have it in their medicine cabinet, and to understand what to do when they choose to work with it.

Amandha: I decided I wanted to make some quick videos and walk people through the book chapter by chapter, helping them understand another layer of the subject and become more confident. Once you understand the nuances, such as which plastics are compatible, there is less fear.

Amandha: You can use a PETE jar and feel comfortable with that material. You can even buy DMSO in plastic if necessary, although I prefer glass for the pure product. Once you understand the material considerations, you can put that concern to rest and focus on using it well.

Amandha: So many people ask me questions about plastics, silicone, implants, Botox, and metals. The book goes through many of these ‘what if’ situations, including children, drug interactions, odour, and making sure the skin is clean before using DMSO.

Amandha: I wanted the book to be easy to read and practical, with recipes and information people would actually use rather than leave sitting on a bookshelf. I am really pleased that readers tell me they feel more comfortable making their own blends or using DMSO with greater confidence.
